SEASON

s.u.m.m.e.r

Summertime in Arizona is here. When it's not hot enough to roast an egg on the sidewalk outside, it'll spontaneously rain on you so hard you'll never find your egg again. Of course, should you live in, say, a cave, all the sunlight really isn't going to make you much of a difference in your life. The temperature, however, may seem a tad bit more toasty...

RAID

Supplies for the caves are running low, even after Wanda and the humans so successfully raided six months ago. There simply are too many people living in the caves now for the usual quantity of supplies to last as long as they used to. Raiders, prepare yourselves: it's time to take a little trip to Phoenix.

 Memories ((Open))
« Thread Started on Jun 11, 2009, 6:53pm »

Jamie sat in the main hall, bored and wanting someone to talk to. He had been sitting here for about half an hour, with no one to talk to. School was getting harder each day. Sharon was a nightmare since Wanda came to the caves. He just never understodd why she disapproved f her so much. Wanda wasn't so bad. She could at least get to know her.... Jamie sighed. He was getting carried away. He knew he shouldn't be getting mad at sharon now. He had to see it from her eyes too, but he really didn't get it.

Jamie picked at his bread roll, eating bits of it. He was hungry, but he didn't like being alone. Wanda was probably in her room with Melanie. They spent a lot of timw together when Ian and Jared were working. He knew they were like sisters now, and he liked that. He never thought that Melanie would like Wanda too much. She had taken her body. But then again, it wasn't really her fault. she was in hybernation when they picked Mel.

Jamie looked around the cafeteria. There weren't that many people here, but they were starting to come in little by little. The dinner today was okay. Not the best, but there was nothing called the 'best' anymore. Life was cruel, and unfair. Jamie knew that, and he knew he had to start accepting it. They had nothing to do about the invasion. they couldn't fight the souls, because they would be fighting people like Mel, who have families and children, and friends and sibblings. It would be unfair for the others. Most of them are probably like the Sekker, Lacey, and Wanda. The humans are still alive in there.

Sitting there, on a table alone, with nothing to do, Jamie's mind flashed back to the day Melanie left....

'"Mel," I whisper, going over to stand by her and Jared. Melanie looks down at me and smiled. I can see tears in her eyes. Jared's jaw tight. For the first time since we've met, there's no smile on his face. Mel reaches down and picks me up, hugging me tightly. I bury my face in her shoulder and start to cry. "Don't leave me." I plead. "Please. Stay with me," I sob.
"Shh," Mel whispers. I can hear her voice shaking, even through the whisper. "You'll be fine," she promises. I can feel her hot tears sinking into my shirt. "I'll always be with you, no matter what," she says. Jared looks away, his fists clenched. I just nod, not able to say anything. “Take care of yourself. I’ll be back as soon as I can,” she said. Her hands loosen a little, but I cling to her. “No,” I sob.
“Jamie, baby, I have to go,” She whispered, pulling me away. She puts me down on my bed, and I continue to sob. My heart seems as though it is being torn in half. Mel blows me a kiss and she hurries away. Jared nods to her, and turns back to me, a small smile on his lips. I can see that this smile is forced. No emotion behind it. His eyes are still tight as he whispers. “Shh,” He rustles my hair. “I’ll be back in a few minutes. Don’t make too much sound, okay?” He says. I nod, muffling my sobs with my pillow. Jared nods, and gets up to follow Mel, and leaves me behind….

Jamie heard a small ‘plop’ and looked down. He hadn’t realized that he was crying. One of his tears had fallen in his soup. He quickly wiped his tears, hoping no one had seen them.

It had been a few days since Melanie accepted Jared's marriage proposal, but no one really knew about it as they kept it fairly low-key until she was able to talk to Wanda and Jamie in private. They were the first people she wanted to tell; after all, Jamie was her brother and Wanda...well, Wanda was like a sister to her. But Jamie...he had always been her Jamie, the little brother she practically raised and loved like her own child. He had grown into the gangly pre-teenager she saw from day-to-day, but he would always be her Jamie, no matter how old he was. When they had been on their own in the outside world, her needs were always sacrificed for his because she loved him. And then they found Jared, who saved them both and had taken care of Jamie while Melanie was taken captive.

Walking into the cafeteria, Melanie still remembered what it was like to come to this place and be an outsider because Wanda was using her body as a host. Even Jared had shunned her, believing that she was really gone. But Jamie never had given up hope that she was still alive and somehow, still inside her own body. It was that faith, with a little convincing on Ian's end and a kiss that was both wanted and unwanted from Jared himself, that finally won Jared over. Now, she was alive and well...in her own body while Wanda was given another body separate of her own because no one wanted her to leave.

Melanie caught sight of Jamie in the cafeteria, eating all alone. Forgetting food for the moment, Melanie went to sit next to her brother. From the look on his face, she knew he was upset. "Jamie? she whispered. "Are you alright?" There was a hint of motherly concern in her voice, much the same she had always used for him when he was younger.

Jamie looked up at Melanie. He hoped there were no more tears on his face. "Hey Mel," He said, makign his tone a little cheerful. "Yeah..yeah, I'm fine," He said. "I've missed you," He said, throwing his arms around her waist. He had seen her this morning, but he missed her. He would never let her go again. He wanted to always be with her. He felt at home, here in her soft embrace. Her smell enveloping him.

Looking into her brother's eyes, she could tell that he had been crying recently. Feeling him wrap his arms around her waist eagerly, she knew that his mood had to do with her not being around so much. Wrapping her arms around her little brother, she stroked his hair a couple of times. "I missed you too Jamie," she gently crooned at him. "And I'm sorry I haven't been around lately. Things have just been so crazy with me getting my body back, being with Jared again, and getting Wanda adjusted to a new body that doesn't have someone inside her head with her. And I know that none of that is an excuse, but it's all I got." Looking into her brother's eyes, she smiled and let go of him, sighing deeply to think of how to begin her next conversation.

"Hey listen," she said gently, stroking his hair like she used to when he was younger. "I do have some really good news that you're going to like though." Melanie knew that Jamie had always looked up to Jared as an older brother of sorts, so her marriage would just make that assumption more permanent. A smile spread across her lips. "You see, I know that you've always thought of Jared as a brother...so we thought of making that a permanent deal..." she giggled and tousled his hair again. "Jared and I are getting married."

Jamie smiled at Mel. "Yeah," He said. "I know. You've been busy, but I still miss you," He said. He was so much more grown up now, but he still acted like a child in front of Melanie. She was like his mother. After their parents were taken, Mel had looked after him, and not just let him go. She had ran every day so afar away just to get him food. She gave herself up, but refused to tell the souls about him. And he admired that about her. Her strength. Her courage. Her love. Everything.

Jamie sat up and braced himself for the good news. At least it was something fun after this long, boring, tireing day. "Yeah," He agreed. He had always thought of Jared as an older brother. He had taken care of him when Mel wasn't there. He had made sure nothing bad happened to him. He was like the father he never got to spend time with. Jamie jumped up when Mel said she and Jared were getting married. "What?!" He gasped. "Seriously? That's awsome!" He said, his tone filling up with excitment. "Congratz sis! I'm so happy for you!" He said.

Seeing the excitement in her younger brother's eyes and hearing it in his voice, she could tell that the news was very welcomed by Jamie. An amusing thought played across Melanie's mind and she had to smile. Marrying Jared would just cement what everyone already knew was there. They had practically been married the whole time they were together, but this would make it official. Melanie stood and drew her brother into a tight hug. "Yeah, we're getting married," she confirmed, smiling again. "Jared proposed to me the other night and I accepted." The memory of that moment filled her mind and she knew that no matter what life would bring for them, she would never forget the moment he asked her to be his wife.

"Hey," she said, pulling away from Jamie for a moment to look at him, "when did you grow another foot and not tell me?" She laughed and messed up his hair. Looking at Jamie, she still saw the little boy she took care of all those years ago. But she also saw the man he was fast becoming. He would be fifteen soon and continue to grow at a fast rate. Soon enough, he would be taller than her and start to build out in muscle. He wouldn't be her little Jamie anymore. However, he would always be that in her heart; the first child she ever took care of and mothered.
